B2 Productions: When Production Budgets Just Don’t Work!!!

Have you ever heard the old saying; ‘you can have it good, fast, or cheap’. Pick any (2) but you can’t have all three. I’ve worked for a long time trying to give my clients all three. However, there are times when I can’t. As a recent example, a very nice person came to me twice with two different projects. Both were projects I’d like to have. On the first one, my budget came in too high. The second project, the budget was just too small for me to justify the expense. In both cases, the client wanted it cheap… and good… and darn fast. When I am operating on a sub 20% margin, and I realize I am not going to get paid for 60-90 days, I can’t do it. I want to, but I can’t.

If you’re not making any money on the project why do it? Prestige? Distribution? Just for the sake of working? If you’re good at something, don’t do it for free. I’m confident that our production company can offer a great product, with a fast turn around, on a reasonable budget. If our clients start to tinker with the balance of any of those (3) options something is going to suffer.

Too many production companies end up on the side of the road because they can’t say no. If you want to survive in this industry, you have to draw a line in the sand when things become unbalanced, and in some cases, move forward to find a better project.
